Long words like Characteristics can be scary, but like many long words you can chop off a bit and get to the main root of the word that makes it easier to understand. In this case if you chop off the istics you’re left with “Character.” You probably know this word because you are asked to name the main characters in a story. They are the people that the story is about. Each one of them is different and has different characteristics. Oh no! The istics is back on there again. No problem. The istics are the things that are special to that person, such as how they look and how they act.
What are Characteristics Anyway?

Horror – We love to be scared!
October 12th, 2009 · No Comments · Introduction to theme

Aaaaaaaaahg! A scary costume at last year's Halloween Parade
Have you ever wondered why we love scary stories so much?
I started thinking about that while I searched the shelves for our Halloween display (with some help). Scary books, also know as the “Horror” genre, are always in big demand at our library, but at this time of the year everyone wants one. Is it because they get our hearts thumping? Do we really like that feeling of being terrified? What do you think? Post a comment below and tell us.
This is the first in our Genres series. Read them all and get a chance to win a trip to the bookstore to buy books and other great prizes.

Winter Holiday – 2 Reading Responses
December 14th, 2008 · 23 Comments · Uncategorized
Holidays are times to relax and do your own thing but don’t stop reading. Holiday reading can be anything you like. Whether you’re a fan of graphic novels or comics, scary stories, or you just love reading those old favourites like Clifford and The Berenstain Bears, now’s your chance. Just practice that metacognition. Stop and make a note on a post-it note, Thinkmark or just a scrap of paper. Log on to Splogg and tell us what you read and what you were thinking.
Don’t forget: – no long retells………just the main idea or a summary. For reminders of the different reading strategies we use go to the Reading Strategies Page.
Have a great holiday, Merry Christmas, Happy New Year and keep on reading!
